Candriam’s Impact: Advancing Cancer Care and Innovation in Japan

07.10.2024

Through the Candriam Institute for Sustainable Development, we are deeply committed to the fight against cancer by supporting several organisations and institutions in this field. These include two prominent Japanese organisations: the Japan Cancer Society (JCS) and the National Cancer Center (NCC). Through these partnerships, Candriam's contributions have played a key role in strengthening cancer prevention and improving patient care.

Japan Cancer Society (JCS)

The JCS has been instrumental in promoting cancer screening and raising public awareness of cancer prevention. One of their key initiatives, supported by Candriam, was the digitalisation of cancer screening vouchers. These digital vouchers, accessible via smartphones, make it easier for vulnerable populations - such as low-income households, single-parent families and the undocumented - to access free cancer screening.

This modern approach eliminates the need for physical vouchers and allows individuals to conveniently receive and share the vouchers with family members or partners, while increasing the number of people screened, which had declined as a result of the Corona disaster. Not to mention the fact that physical vouchers can be easily lost or overlooked. In 2022, JCS expanded its cancer screening efforts to cover the five most common cancers, including breast, cervical, colorectal, stomach and lung.

In addition to increasing access to screening, JCS has focused on supporting cancer survivors and their families. Through its Cancer Survivor Club and events such as Relay for Life, the organisation has created spaces for survivors to connect, share their experiences and feel supported by their communities.

Candriam's support has been instrumental in strengthening these efforts. One outstanding achievement has been the expansion of the cancer helpline. Candriam Institute for Sustainable Development's funding enabled the hotline to operate on national holidays, ensuring that patients and their families have access to critical information and support whenever they need it. In the 2022-2023 period, the hotline received over 9,100 consultations, an increase of 26.5% compared to the previous year. Feedback from users highlighted the reassurance and convenience provided by the extended service.

National Cancer Center (NCC)

As Japan's leading institution for cancer research and treatment, the NCC plays a vital role in advancing cancer care. Established in 1962, the NCC is at the forefront of cutting-edge research, particularly in the field of cancer genomics. This research aims to develop personalised treatments for cancer patients, helping to address unmet medical needs through innovation.

One of the NCC's recent achievements, supported by Candriam, has been its continued progress in cancer genomic medicine. Using genomic data, the NCC is developing minimally invasive treatments and strategies for early cancer detection. The Center's groundbreaking research into pancreatic cancer diagnostics, which has led to the approval of a new blood test for early detection, exemplifies its commitment to improving cancer outcomes.

Despite receiving less than 10% of its funding from the Japanese government, the NCC has managed to thrive through partnerships and private donations. Candriam Institute for Sustainable Development's ongoing financial contributions have given NCC staff confidence in their future research and care plans, helping to ensure the long-term sustainability of their projects.

Candriam Institute for Sustainable Development's support of both the Japan Cancer Society and the National Cancer Center demonstrates the profound impact that corporate partnerships can have in the fight against cancer. From improving access to screening and counseling to advancing cutting-edge research, Candriam's contributions are helping to advance cancer care in Japan and bring hope to patients and their families. Through these partnerships, Candriam demonstrates its commitment to making a difference in global healthcare, particularly in the fight against one of the world's most challenging diseases.
